Safe, Legal and Confidential Care

Termination of pregnancy is legal in India under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, within the conditions and gestational limits that the Act specifies. It may be required where the pregnancy poses a risk to the woman's health, where serious foetal abnormality has been diagnosed, following contraceptive failure, or in the other circumstances the Act recognises.

Naari Hospital is a registered facility with qualified specialists, and every consultation is confidential. Care begins with counselling: confirming the gestation by ultrasound, explaining the available methods honestly, and giving you time to ask questions. Unsafe termination outside a registered facility remains a major cause of preventable harm, which is precisely why this care exists within a hospital setting.

What the Care Involves

The appropriate method depends on the gestational age, your medical history and your own preference after counselling.

  • Confidential consultation - your privacy is protected throughout, and the identity of a woman undergoing the procedure is protected in law.
  • Confirming the pregnancy - ultrasound to establish gestational age accurately and to rule out ectopic pregnancy.
  • Pre-procedure assessment - blood group and Rh typing, haemoglobin and relevant medical history.
  • Medical method - prescribed medication under medical supervision within the permitted gestational limit, never obtained or taken on your own.
  • Surgical method - performed in an operating theatre with appropriate anaesthesia by a qualified specialist.
  • Anti-D immunoglobulin - given where the mother is Rh negative, to protect future pregnancies.
  • Follow-up review - confirming that the process is complete and identifying any complication early.
  • Contraception and counselling - contraception discussed and started, and emotional support offered for as long as it is needed.

Medication for terminating a pregnancy must never be bought over the counter or taken without supervision. Doing so risks incomplete termination, heavy bleeding and infection, and it can miss an ectopic pregnancy entirely. Please speak to a doctor first.
