Understanding Pre Puberty Counselling
The years just before puberty bring rapid physical and emotional change, and most girls meet them with more questions than answers. Pre puberty counselling gives a young girl accurate, age-appropriate information before those changes begin, so that the first period or the first growth spurt arrives as something she was expecting rather than something that frightens her.
At Naari Hospital these sessions are unhurried and private. We speak with the child in language suited to her age, and separately with parents, so that everyone leaves with the same understanding. Where a girl is developing noticeably earlier or later than her peers, we assess growth patterns and investigate further only when there is a clinical reason to.
What the Session Covers
Every consultation is shaped around the girl's age and what she already knows. Broadly, we work through the following.
- Body changes explained simply - breast development, height growth, body hair and skin changes, and why the timing differs from friend to friend.
- Getting ready for the first period - what to expect, what is normal, and how to be prepared at school or while travelling.
- Menstrual hygiene - choosing and changing sanitary products, safe disposal, and keeping infections away.
- Nutrition and growth - iron, calcium and protein needs during a phase of rapid growth, and the value of regular physical activity.
- Emotional wellbeing - mood shifts, body image, peer comparison and confidence.
- Personal safety awareness - understanding boundaries and knowing which adults to turn to.
- Growth assessment - height, weight and development milestones reviewed against expected ranges, with investigations only where indicated.
Signs of very early development, such as breast development before the age of eight, or no signs of puberty by the age of thirteen, are worth an early consultation with our specialists.
